Dr. Verontae L. Deams is an academic administrator at Tennessee State University in the Division of Enrollment Management where he serves as the Associate Registrar. Dr. Deams is passionate about student engagement, mentorship, and academic success through contextual learning. This passion is expressed in his role as adjunct professor of Service and Leadership at TSU. Dr. Deams has direct experience with course evaluation, curriculum development, distance learning, and multiculturalism. He has been educated at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Tennessee State University, and Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee.  Dr. Deams is a volunteer with the Tennessee Promise Program where he mentors high school and college students. Additionally, he is affiliated with the ALERT Community Development Corporation Program and a regular volunteer with Rutherford County Read to Succeed.  Dr. Deams is member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated where he serves as the Recording Secretary for the Omicron Sigma Lambda chapter in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He is also a member of the district leadership team for the Association of Tennessee Alphamen. For his commitment to leadership, service, and brotherhood, Dr. Deams was awarded the President’s Award from the Omicron Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

Dr. Deams is also a Senator on the Tennessee State University Staff Senate where he has implemented professional development trainings and seminars for faculty and staff members. In an effort to share a contemporary perspective on multicultural gifted education, Dr. Deams is a contributing author in the book entitled “Gumbo for the Soul: Males of Color Share Their Stories, Meditations, Affirmations and Inspirations”. Dr. Deams is married to Dr. Pernella Rowena Deams, and together, they are raising their children, Kyra, Micah, Rhien, and Lauryn, in Smyrna, Tennessee.
