Dr. Valez Thornton

Belmont University
Dr. Valez Thornton, is a Financial Aid Counselor at Belmont University where she manages the federal work study program and student employment processes. With over 12 years of experience in higher education administration, Dr. Thornton has served on a host of university committees and held leadership positions on university staff advisory councils. She is significantly involved in campus community groups that serve as changes agents by initiating, developing, and implementing programs set forth by senior leaders to increase diversity and inclusion of underrepresented individuals on campus.

Dr. Thornton earned her bachelors from Middle Tennessee State University, masters from Belmont University, and doctorate from Lipscomb University and intends to use the knowledge she has gained through furthering her education to advocate for equity in education. With that goal in mind, Dr. Thornton is currently working on designing a seminar and tutorial series to help students and parents with completing the FAFSA.

Dr. Thornton is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc., has served as past chapter president, and currently serves as co-advisor to the undergraduate chapter of AKA on Belmont’s campus. Dr. Thornton attends Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church where she sings in the choir and serves in leadership roles on several different ministries. Originally from Birmingham, AL., Dr. Thornton currently resides in Nashville, TN.
