The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of marijuana use and its impact on academic outcomes as measured by student GPA within Coalition for Healthy and Safe Campus Communities’ (CHASCo) member institutions over a 5-year period.  Additionally, the purpose of the study was to determine if there were differences in marijuana use between student groups, to help CHASCo member institutions develop marijuana intervention and prevention programs.  Four research questions led to the development of nine null hypotheses.  The researchers used statistical analyses to test the null hypotheses to determine the significance in relationship between student marijuana use and academic outcomes.  Statistical tests were also used to determine the significance in difference of marijuana use between student groups.  The researchers employed a mixed-methods quantitative dominant research design including correlational, causal-comparative, and qualitative case study components.

The purpose of this presentation is to provide the results of the study as it relates to the effects of marijuana use for academic outcomes and the various student groups. The presentation will be organized based on research questions, methodology, and findings.

Learning Objectives:
  • The trends of marijuana use among CHASCo member institutions over a 5-year period.
  • The Relationship between marijuana use and academic outcomes over a 5-year period.
  • The difference in marijuana use between student groups over a 5-year period.
  • College administrators’ perceptions of marijuana use prevention and intervention programs.
  • Recommendations for practice and further research in prevention and intervention for CHASCo member institutions.
